CDS Physical Education
September 2013

Off and Running!!!

Congratulations to everyone on a great start to yet another school year!!!

PreK-2

Parents, please check your child’s schedule for the day of their PE class.  Please remember to outfit them with an appropriate sneaker and comfortable clothing for physical activity.

This month in PE class, students will be reviewing listening and following directions skills.  We will be learning and practicing many locomotor and non-locomotor movement skills, demonstrating how to perform those skills in a safe and controlled manner.  We will also be learning and practicing spacial and body awareness through both individual and cooperative activities.  Many students are starting soccer participation at this age, so we will also be teaching various kicking skills as well to support their recreational activities.

Grades 3-4

Parents, please check your child’s schedule for the day of their PE class.  Please remember to outfit them with an appropriate sneaker and comfortable clothing for physical activity.

This month in PE class, students will be practicing personal and social skills by identifying what our CDS core values look like in class and how to apply them.  We will also be using combinations of motor patterns and spacial and body awareness concepts to introduce personal fitness concepts.  I know many students are involved in local recreation programs this fall.  Grades 3 and 4 will also be practicing basic soccer skills and applying those skills in lead-up games and team activities.

Grades 5-8

Students are required to attend all regularly scheduled classes. Students should be dressed safely and appropriately for physical education classes.  Students in fifth through eighth grades will be using the locker rooms to change into appropriate Physical Education attire. This clothing should not be worn to school. Physical Education attire includes sweatpants or shorts, t-shirt or sweatshirt, socks, and thin soled athletic sneakers.  Lockers and locks are provided.
This month middle school students will be practicing personal and social skills as they relate to CDS core values and leadership development.  We will be performing group problem solving activities and playing group games to reinforce these concepts.  Also, while the weather is still warm, middle schoolers will also have a PE unit of Soccer. (inside or outside depending on weather, field conditions)  Students will practice and apply individual skills, perform partner/group drills and activities, and participate in group/team games to learn application of rules and develop appropriate strategies.
